IIT

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public technical universities in India, established under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, and are designated as Institutes of National Importance. They are renowned internationally for engineering and technological education, research excellence, and strong industry connections. The IIT system is governed collectively by the IIT Council.

Total IITs

There are 23 IITs across India. These campuses offer undergraduate (B.Tech/B.S.), postgraduate (M.Tech/M.S.), and doctoral programs. Admission to undergraduate engineering programs at IITs is through JEE Advanced which is preceded by qualifying in JEE Main

Entrance Exams for IITs

  • JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination – Main)
  • JEE Advanced

Purpose

  • Qualifying exam for engineering and architecture admissions at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc.
  • Acts as the first stage for JEE Advanced eligibility.

Exam Pattern (B.E./B.Tech – Paper 1)

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • Total Questions: 90 (75 to be attempted)
  • Marks: 300
  • Marking Scheme: +4 for correct MCQ, -1 for wrong MCQ; no negative for numerical answers
  • Duration: 3 hours (Pattern as per the 2026 official guide.)

Eligibility

  • Must have passed 10+2 (or equivalent) with required subjects — Physics, Mathematics & one of Chemistry/Biology/Technical subjects.
  • No age limit (according to current NTA rules).
  • Up to 3 attempts allowed in consecutive years.
